Avukana Buddha statue is located in the village of Avukana, near kekirawa,  in the Anuradhapura district. It is more than 39 feet and 10 inches high and carved out from the granite cliff.

Avukana Buddha statue is one of the tallest Buddha statues in Sri Lanka. The statue reaches 42 feet’s with the pedestal. Avukana Buddha statue is commonly believed that this statue was built by the period of king Dhatusen, which was the ruler of the Anuradhapura period. Mudra of the Statue

Avukana Buddha statue is almost free-standing. It is joined to the cliff by just a narrow pace of rock. It is standing on the granite lotus flower. This double petal lotus flower called ‘Padmasana’ meaning the lotus seat. The statues right hand is raised up to the right shoulder. The palm is facing left. This position is known as the Abhaya mudra.

The Rope Art of the Statue

The rope is worn over the left shoulder. The right shoulder is bare. The robe is worn tightly and clearly outlining the shape of the body. The robe’s pleats are carved very clearly.  Avukana Buddha statue is in extremely good condition. Its features and details are very sharp and clear.

The siraspatha

The siraspatha is the symbol placed on the top of the Buddha statue. The siraspatha of the Avukana Buddha statue is believed to be a modern addition, in the year 1870.

Structure of the shrining house.

The statue had been located within the large image house of the shrine. The part of the walls of the shrining house still remains. That structure was made of brick and stone. It was 74 feet long and 63 feet wide. It is believed that there was a roof made of wood in ancient times.

Avukana Buddha statue shows some influence of the “Gandhara school of art’ in India. It is similar as well as the ‘Amarawathi school of art’.

 Avukana Buddha the statue was very delicately carved, resulting in an image of finesse and grace. The raindrops will flow down vertically and land right between the feet of the statue.it may have been made of competition between master and a pupil. The statue now gets the best tourist attraction.
